Amritsar, founded in 1577 by Ramdas, the fourth Sikh guru, is the major city of Punjab and the most important religious center for Sikhs. City name means "the pond filled with nectar," and refers to the lake, over which was built the Golden Temple.
Amritsar although he is not actually anything different from typical Indian city, the temple is a place very beautiful and full of peace. Area under the buildings of the town appointed Akbar the Great Mogul. In 1761 Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Amritsar plundered and destroyed the temple. Amritsaru Old Town, located southeast of the main railway station, surrounded by the road, around which rose once massive city walls. Of the eighteen entrance gates, only one remembers the times of founding of the city. It is the north gate, located opposite the Ram Bagh. Both the Golden Temple, and the narrow streets of the bazaar can be found in the Old Town. More modern buildings Amritsaru stretches northeast from the station. In this part of town is where most hotels. Bus station is located on the way to Delhi, 2 km east from the railway station at the GT Road. |
